Merry Christmas

Since this blog site is brand new to us, we will try to recap the highlights of 2010 beginning with the most recent and working backwards.  As of this week, we are just happy to have our whole family back together again for the holidays.
Curt and Shawna – Just doing the same things…Curt works on the Scouting side of YM with the Teachers and Shawna still serves in Primary.  Shawna loves her chickens and geese…well, maybe not the geese as much since they have become pretty mean, but I still take care of them…and the one remaining rooster now hates me for some unknown reason, but I still feed him too (the other rooster unfortunately had an accident involving Curt’s foot earlier in the summer after it attacked Porter). Still homeschooling 3 kids.   Curt gets to spend plenty of time fixing up things around the house and yard.

December 2010 – Choir concerts.  On Saturday the 11th Porter and Hailey had their Christmas choir concert for Young Artists at 5:30 p.m.  Since Porter is 9 now, he sings in Advanced as well as the Apprentice group.  Hailey still sings in Apprentice.  Then we raced from there to Skyler’s concert with Caldwell High School which began at 7 p.m.  He sings with the Madrigals and was also in a barbershop group that performed Auld Lang Syne.  We love listening to the kids perform.  We missed Ashley’s performance with ISU Women’s Choir on the 3rd in Pocatello due to a Primary talent show that we needed to stay here for.  Ashley also is home for three weeks for the holidays.
September 2010 – At the beginning of September Curt, Shawna, and Skyler took a short trip to Rapid City, SD.  We were actually checking out a job there.  The people were very friendly and it was beautiful, but we decided it was not the right place for our family.  Despite that, we had a terrific time visiting Mount Rushmore.  At the end of the month Curt went on a week-long backpacking trip to the White Clouds in the Sawtooths with his brothers, Mark and Kevin.  After an exciting first night fighting with a surprise kidney stone, Curt had an amazing time and caught some large fish.

August 2010 – Our family, except for Ashley, rented a cabin in Garden Valley, ID and spent the week enjoying the small-town experience.  We swam in the heated pool – a lot – went four-wheeling in the mountains, took a trail ride on horses, and watched an outdoor play.  Then we dashed home and loaded the car to take Ashley to her first away-at-college experience at Idaho State University in Pocatello.  She is staying in the dorms and having a lot of fun, but still managing to get good grades as well!  She has a reputation at the dorm for whooping up on the boys at Guitar Hero.
July 2010 – Our Stake went on a Pioneer Handcart Trek across Wyoming to Martin’s Cove and Rocky Ridge which Skyler was able to attend.  It was almost 100 degrees and he even walked several miles of the trek without his shoes on just for the experience.  He loved it.  What an amazing week he had.  He also had the opportunity to sing a solo of The Prayer of the Walking Child for a fireside while they were there.  That is definitely one of the saddest songs I have ever heard.  At the end of the week they did baptisms at the Salt Lake Temple and Skyler was able to be baptized for some family names that he helped work on for this event.
February 2010 – Skyler played the part of Charlie Cowell in Caldwell High School’s presentation of Music Man.  Ashley was in the pit playing the piano for the musical.

Skyler

Skyler loves to sing.  He has also become pretty good at the piano, especially with just sitting down at the keyboard and arranging and creating new songs. He does beautiful work; the downside is that he doesn’t write any of it down.  Maybe we can change that in the future. He also is frequently looking for ways to serve others.
In February he played the part of Charlie Cowell in the high school's musical, The Music Man. He also got his license, turned 16, and got braces.
In March he traveled with the Caldwell High School choir to Seattle, Washington where he participated in a choral festival. While there, he attended a Seattle Mariners' game, took a boat ride, ate fresh salmon, and visited Pike's market.
He still loves four wheeling, and snowboarding.

Porter

Porter is crazy about reading and has impeccable penmanship.  If there's any possible way of finding a way to make money out of a situation, he will find it. He is the little entrepreneur. Porter stays busy keeping up with his older brother. In addition to Apprentice choir, he's now joined Advanced choir in the Treasure Valley Young Artists. Also, he is constantly thinking up new methods to try and bargain a little X-Box time out of Mom.

Hailey

Hailey: still our little princess. She loves to plan family activities and make cards for people that are sick or sad. If you're baking in the kitchen she loves to help. Her apron is a very normal wardrobe accessory for her. Her singing skills have grown immensely as she's continued to participate in the Treasure Valley Young Artists Children's choir, and she loves to sing little duets with Porter. Hailey has become a BSU Broncos fan this year (small in size but big in spirit), and still loves the color pink.
